Why Are Some Dates Highlighted (But No Holidays)?
We get this question all the time, and we totally understand why! It can be a little confusing to see April 20th highlighted (that’s my dad’s birthday!) while Easter isn’t, or to notice February 10th (Violet’s birthday) instead of Valentine’s Day. Or maybe you’ve spotted that July 2nd is highlighted, that one’s mine but the 4th is skipped right over.
So why do we skip holidays but include our family birthdays?
Well, we’ve never highlighted holidays because we want our calendars to be something everyone can enjoy, no matter what you celebrate. Our focus has always been on creating a beautiful, artful piece, something you’ll be happy to look at every day for a whole month.
When did this tradition start?
My grandparents began making the calendar in the early 1970s, but it wasn’t until the early 2000s when they started highlighting family birthdays. It wasn't consistent at first but by 2005 everyone's birthday was included and it has stunk ever since. Honestly, I think the main reason was simply because we could and because it was fun! We were making the calendars for our friends, family, and ourselves, so why not include our loved ones’ birthdays?
Over the years, as our family grew, more birthdays were added. Now there are about 12 highlighted dates throughout the year. Some months—like January, May, August, and September don’t have any birthdays, while others (like December) have three!
And now I’ll leave you with this thought…
Would you ever want your family’s birthdays highlighted on your calendar?
