The Dolphin Studio’s patriarch, John, is the artist behind this month’s image. He first created it in 1995, and we’ve brought it back for a couple of reasons. Most of all, because it radiates joy. The images' pure simplicity and childlike charm have a way of bringing smiles to those who see it.
We also chose it again, 30 years later, because of the technique: a single continuous line forming the entire drawing. I only recently learned that this style is often described as abstract and whimsical—two qualities John cherished in all his creative work, whether it was drawing, painting, or ceramics.
I have countless memories of my dad picking up a pen or pencil and doodling on whatever scrap of paper was nearby. Almost always, his doodles unfolded as continuous-line drawings—playful, magical, and wonderfully comical.
So when you look at September’s image… What strikes you first? A smile? A spark of joy? A sense of curiosity? Or maybe it’s not one of your favorites—and that’s perfectly okay, too.
