Our second print for our 2026 print club is very much inspired by one of John ffrench’s drawings that he made before he died. I (Lily), his oldest granddaughter, then turned it into a screen print version that would fit on the print club paper.

John was known for this type of design not only in his screen printing, but also in his pottery. This drawing was no different. Below is another print he made that was inspired by one of the ceramic panels.

So how was this made? I took the original drawing, photographed it, and uploaded it into Procreate, a software we use to draw on a ipad. I then traced the design and scaled it for the print size. After that, I separated the colors on the iPad and printed each one out on a printer. Once that was done, I traced each layer with black ink to make the transparencies so we could create the screens for printing. Kerry then made the screens, and we were able to start color testing!!

A lot of colors could have worked with this design, that is why we did so many color testings, they all looked great! I really wanted to include a bit of green as a nod to St. Patrick’s Day, since John was Irish. In the end, we actually had to do a studio vote to decide which one we wanted to run and send out!
Hope you love March’s print club design as much as I loved making it.
