You know how when you go to a conference or event there is often swag that comes along with it? Things like branded coozies, mugs, water bottles, t-shirts, even socks and stickers? They are doled out like EVERYONE wants them.
I mean, there are some benefits to swag…. I guess. The memories of a fun event, meeting new friends and a reminder of the knowledge gained.
When planning the second annual Rags to Riches Summit, I wanted to have truly meaningful, artfully made, utilitarian mementos available for those who want to take home something special.
Dan, of Daniel Bellow Pottery in Great Barrington Massachusetts and I have been friends for a very long time. We had parallel businesses for many years. Sold at the same tradeshows, even to many of the same customers. We even both named our sons Ben….
My dad was a local potter and the two of them really enjoyed each other’s company, and shared common book-wormy interests.
When it came time to find just the right Rags to Riches mug Dan was the first person who came to mind. He generally produces for the likes of Anthropologie, UnCommon Goods, and a high-end restaurant here and there. He works in porcelain with a weight and line maybe a little incongruent to the medium yet somehow, the combination is regal, and utilitarian all at once.
He was immediately amiable to my request and we decided the best way to brand his mugs would be with custom decals affixed and fired right onto the surface. The results are simply gorgeous!
