My ongoing research in textile waste, used clothing life-cycle and fashion industry led me to Re/Make and immediately captivated me. Making fashion a force for good…. I could certainly get behind that.
Just over three years passed since discovering Re/Make and witnessing Ayesha’s commitment to mission. She’s composed and eloquent standing in the way of big exploitation. The girl makes it easy for us to move mountains.
Being among the growing group of Re/Make Ambassadors is heavenly; conscious humans devoted to our shared mission builds sweet confidence our future. I’m not the ONLY environmental optimist in the room!
Ayesha has spent years in deep-dive, undercover research, assessing manufacturing aspects of the fashion industry. She has spent nearly as long exposing and addressing exploitation with gentle far-reaching accessible education.
In 2021 Re/Make played a key role in passing the California Garment Workers Rights Act. Their well designed social change campaigns are accessible and get results. Ayesha is powerful compassionate and stalwart all at once. Her conviction to stop fashion industry’s atrocities is making a lot of people’s lives better while addressing excessive consumption.
Here is her bio:
Ayesha Barenblat is a social entrepreneur with a passion for building sustainable supply chains that respect people and our planet. With over 15 years of leadership to promote social justice and sustainability within the fashion industry, she founded Remake to mobilize citizens to demand a more just, transparent, and accountable fashion industry. Remake’s free educational resources, advocacy campaigns, and sustainable brands directory are focused on making fashion a force for good.
Ayesha has worked across the public, private, and civil society sectors to promote the rights and dignity of the women who make our clothes. Prior to founding Remake, she led brand engagement at Better Work, a World Bank and United Nations partnership, to ensure safe and decent working conditions in garment factories around the world. Prior to this, she ran the fashion vertical at BSR, providing strategic advice to brands including Levi Strauss and Company, Marks and Spencer, Nike, and the Gucci Group on the design and integration of sustainability into business. She has a master’s degree in public policy from the University of California, Berkeley.
She counts both Karachi and San Francisco as her homes, and she is happiest when spending time with the women who bring our fashion to life and amplifying the stories of fashion’s most essential workers.
She was one of the first people I asked to speak at Rags To Riches when the summit was still just an idea. She handed me ‘proof of concept’ with her eager willingness to participate – She will be with us on Earthday, April 22 – Day 3 of Rags to Riches Textile Upcycling Summit.
Ayesha has a message to share. Gentle, kind, brilliant and powerful… Let’s listen and then emulate.
