This month over on the Stitcherhood our theme is Blankets and Quilts. All Stitcherhood endeavors are focused on reusing textiles, whether that means used clothing, diving into that vintage fabric stash, or gathering scraps from other projects, or makers, or industry to spin into something magically gorgeous and useful.
Today I would like to introduce you to WelcomeBlanket.org, a really cool concept that I stumbled across on Instagram and am excited to participate in. Jayna Zweiman, best known as the co-founder of the PussyHat Project, not only conceived of the creative idea of WelcomeBlanket.org but has also put a system in place enabling anyone with the desire to participate and get their work into the homes of our newest countrymen.
The idea is to make a 40”x40” blanket that you love, one that might be a little hard to give away, and, well give it away. Recipients are gifted handmade blankets from all across this amazing country made by knitters, crocheters, sewers, and quilters who want to use their skill to gift a welcome much warmer than words can convey.
I encourage you to make a Welcome Blanket.
Here’s how:
1. Make a Welcome Blanket. Design guidelines: 40”x40”, easy to care for and it should hurt a little to give it away
2. Include a welcome note with a story important to your family about immigration, migration or relocation
3. Send your gorgeous blanket and note to Museum of Design Atlanta: 1315 Peachtree St., NE / Atlanta, GA 30309
